Description

Nanohydroxyapatite is the main component of mineral bone with exceptional biocompatibility and bioactivity properties to bone cells and tissues. Dental rod-like nanohydroxyapatite is used in oral care products as toothpaste filler as well as in dental cement for re-mineralization, as fillers in dental resin composites, and in bio-bone remineralization. Nanostreams offer rod-shaped nano-hydroxyapatite in powder, dispersion, as well as a paste with a particle size of 50nms and uniform morphology.

Hydroxyapatite is a calcium phosphate similar to the human bone in morphology and composition a stoichiometric Ca/P molar ratio of 1.67. Hydroxyapatite is more stable compared to other calcium phosphates under physiological conditions as temperature, pH, and body fluids.

Nano-hydroxyapatite is used in prosthetic applications due to its similarity in size, crystallography, and chemical composition with human hard tissue. Bone and teeth enamel is largely composed of hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite is biocompatible, bioactive, osteoconductive, and nontoxic biomaterial.

Up to 70% by weight of human bone is a modified form of carbonated hydroxyapatite, known as mineral bone. Carbonated hydroxyapatite is a barely crystalline calcium deficient form of hydroxyapatite and is the main mineral of dental enamel and dentin.

Remineralization of tooth enamel involves the restoration of ions into the demineralized surface using remineralizing hydroxyapatite. Demineralization is the process of removing calcium and phosphorous ions drawn out from the enamel and dentin surfaces due to the acidic environment in the mouth which dissolves the enamel by the acid attack by cariogenic bacteria.

Nanohydroxyapatite possesses a strong remineralizing effect and has the capacity to reverse the surface by infiltrating the demineralized pores on the tooth surface and forming a protective layer. Nano hydroxyapatite is used in toothpaste to treat dental hypersensitivity through the repair and remineralization of the enamel, thus helping to prevent tooth sensitivity.
